I wasn’t going to write a blog this week as I have been busy adding content to my website. But I went to a Los Angeles Dodgers game, my first since the start of the pandemic, and felt that I had to comment. I have been going to Dodgers games since I was a little boy with my dad because that is one of the rites of passage for fathers and sons. Every year I try to go to a handful of games and, after a pandemic induced year off, I was looking forward to my first game in nearly two years. Last year we were going to attend some spring training games and, the day before we were to fly to Arizona, MLB announced the cancellation of spring training. So I was really jonsing for some live ball.
Built in 1962, Dodger Stadium has been described by various sources as one of the most beautiful stadiums in the Major Leagues. I can’t say that I’m qualified to attest to that one way or the other as I’ve only been to five other stadiums. That leaves 24 stadiums to go, but don’t worry, they’re on my bucket list. Dodger Stadium is, in fact, the second oldest stadium in the National League behind Wrigley Field. Ownership has always done a fantastic job of maintaining the facility, seeing her through several multi-million-dollar renovations over the years. And to me, of the six stadiums I have been to, seven if you count Qualcomm before the Padres moved to Petco, it is the most aesthetically pleasing. It has a delightful symmetry to it with great sightlines and magnificent views of the San Gabriel mountains. It is clean and the staff is friendly. It has always been an enjoyable experience seeing a game there.
That being said, this most recent visit to Dodger Stadium was less than inspiring. Let’s start with getting into the Stadium. That can be daunting even on the best of occasions. But having been going there these many years I thought I had figured out the fastest route into the parking lot that completely surrounds the Stadium. We traveled south on interstate 5 and transitioned onto the 110 freeway, aiming for the Dodger Stadium exit. From the bottom of the off ramp there are three lanes, generally overseen by a traffic cop; one lane goes left, one goes right, and the middle lane goes straight ahead into the Stadium. There is usually a slight bottle neck here as we compete with cross traffic but usually no more than about 10 or 15 minutes. On this day it was at least a 30-minute delay as traffic was backed up from the main entrance all the way to the bottom of the hill. At the time I thought, well it’s Sunday. Probably a packed house. Seating capacity is 56,000 and when the Stadium is full the parking lot is over full. Not the case. Paid attendance was announced as 42,000 but I doubt there were more than 25,000 in the house. It seems the problem was the new technology. Everything is going digital and they are no longer accepting paper parking passes which, you would download and then print out on your home printer. Now you have to download the free ballpark app and all your tickets are held there digitally, including your parking pass, which they scan as you drive into the Stadium. This is the way every team in MLB is ticketing these days. I think the scanning process is probably slowing things down but, hopefully, they will streamline that as time goes on.
Once we found parking the next obstacle was to get into the Stadium itself. That has changed as well as they are going digital here also. Used to be, if the game wasn’t a sellout, you could buy tickets at a walk-up window. Those windows are now closed, permanently I suspect, as they only take tickets digitally through the ballpark app. Getting through the turn style was actually a little bit quicker. Even with the old paper style tickets they had to scan the barcode. Now they just scan your phone. You also had to pass through a metal detector after emptying your pockets of anything metal; keys, wallet, phone, knives, guns, hand grenades, the usual paraphernalia. Now you just hold your phone above your head and walk on through. That will probably last until the first time some nut case sneaks in a gun and shoots somebody, like what recently happened in Washington.
I also have a gripe about ticket prices, but this applies to pretty much any sporting event or concert out there. The Dodgers were having a special promotion commemorating the 1981 World Series championship team. They were selling ‘select’ tickets for $19.81. Select, meaning the two end sections on the top deck. I think I saw St. Peter while I was up there. Anyway, they add on special handling and processing fees making the price of the ticket almost $30. That’s still a great bargain these days but why all the processing mumbo jumbo. Why not just say it’s a $30 ticket and be done with it? What are processing and handling fees anyway? Everything is electronic! There is no handling! That’s the whole point of being electronic in this new COVID inspired world! It’s an electronic ticket! What kind of processing could there possibly be?
Okay, here’s one aimed squarely at the Dodgers and their pricing policy. For years they have had a special deal out in the right field pavilion for every home game. All 81 of them. The price of the ticket also buys you all of the hot dogs and peanuts you can eat and all the soda you can drink. The ticket price tends to vary depending on who is playing. The last time I sat out there, over two years ago, I don’t remember who they were playing, but the ticket was $42. For this game on Sunday, when we first got there, we bought three Dodger dogs and two sodas for $45. (More on this later). I love Dodger dogs and I’ll usually have a fourth dog, a bag of peanuts, and another soda, easily another $20 bringing my food total to around $65 or more. For that $42 ticket price, it’s almost like they’re saying come in and watch the game for free and here’s $20 for food. They announced that they have discontinued that promotion indefinitely. I understand they have to make a profit, but that was a very popular promotion that drew a lot of fans. At those concession prices I know they weren’t losing money. They also made a change with the huge $100 million remodeling project they completed just before COVID shut everything down. Before the remodel you could not walk around the entire circumference of the Stadium from inside the ballpark. This meant that fans did not have access to the left field or right field pavilion unless they had tickets. They’ve added stairs, elevators, and escalators so that now fans can walk the entire circumference. This change also gives fans access to the right field pavilion and, possibly, management is concerned that some fans will be sneaking in for free food. It seems to me the simplest solution to that, though, is to issue ticketed fans a wristband. A fan cannot get free food unless they show the wristband. I’m not sure if this had anything to do with their decision to discontinue the all-you-can-eat promotion or not. Personally, I think they should bring it back. If they are that worried about profit raise the prices a few bucks.
Now the concessions! Big problems there! Where to begin? Well first, LA county had just placed mask restrictions on everyone the previous week. The county said you cannot go inside of a building without wearing a mask. We didn’t have to wear a mask to the game but, in order to buy food, we had to wear a mask. Coming down from Kern County, where we don’t have the restrictions, I didn’t think to carry a mask with me into the Stadium. Could have bought one at the Dodgers store but I didn’t. I can imagine how much they would charge for a simple cloth mask. Much like real estate, it is a sellers-market, and they have a captive audience. Fortunately, my friend Eric, who attended the game with me, had a mask. Although that did put me at his mercy as to how much I could or could not eat. He probably saved me some money. The aforementioned three hotdogs and two cokes were $45. I was looking at the menu and all it showed was a $10 coke with a souvenir plastic cup. I do not need any more Dodger paraphernalia at my house, especially a cheap plastic cup with the Dodgers logo emblazoned on it, but that was the only choice we had. You buy the cup, or you go thirsty. Or drink bottled water. Blech! There is the beer option. Although I’m not much of a beer drinker and beer is even more expensive than the soda. When it comes to payment, they no longer accept cash, only credit cards. This one actually makes a little sense. I read somewhere that the COVID virus can survive on paper money for several days. Even pre-COVID, paper money is some of the filthiest stuff out there, when you stop to consider how many times it is handled and by whom. When you get right down to it, human beings are pretty filthy animals. Unless I had to, I wouldn’t want to touch one. Also, the move to credit cards eliminates the need to spend a lot of time counting back change so this one may speed things up a little bit, especially if you have one of the new tap cards.
It doesn’t end there though. They have eliminated the condiment stations. Instead, they now give you little packets of ketchup, mustard, and relish. No onions! What’s a Dodger dog without onions!? I loved turning the little hand cranks to crank out the relish and onions. And really, looking back, as unsanitary as that was, that was part of the experience. I don’t recall hearing about too many people getting food poisoning from the condiment stations at Dodger Stadium. They also stopped using Farmer John brand hotdogs. Now they use hot dogs produced by Papa Cantella’s. They are a local distributor, as was Farmer John, but personally, I don’t think these hot dogs measure up. Eric agreed! I don’t know what precipitated the break with Farmer John, but my understanding is the Dodgers have a multi-year contract with Papa Cantella’s. I guess that isn’t going to change for quite some time. Straws are gone! Not sure about this one. Was it because it’s one less surface that is touched? Maybe another way to save money. I mean how much does 20,000 – 40,000 straws cost. Multiply that by 81 games. Or maybe it was a concession, pun intended, to pressure from environmentalists crying about all of the plastic trash we create. Actually, while I tend to lean heavily to the right on most issues, the plastic problem is something on which I do agree with the liberal left. One last thing about the concessions and then we will move on. The Dodgers also eliminated the guys working the crowd, walking up and down the aisles hawking peanuts, cotton candy, crackerjack, ice cream, cold sodas, and souvenirs. I suspect this one is most definitely temporary, and they will be back when the restrictions are completely lifted. Although, if the Dodgers are committed to a credit card only policy, that could be a problem.
Security is inconsistent. First, they all but eliminated the metal detectors, but try and approach a concession stand maskless and you have two security people telling you not to do that. At the start of the eighth inning, we decided to take a walk. We got all the way to field level, and nobody tried to stop us. We stuck to the concourse so maybe, had we attempted to grab a couple of the many empty seats, we would have been stopped. We could have watched the game from the concourse if we didn’t mind standing. We continued to work our way around the Stadium. The idea was to take advantage of the new design and go all the way around. Unfortunately, I made the mistake off following Eric. We wandered out an exit and continued around, now outside the Stadium. When we realized our mistake, we also discovered there was a firmly enforced no readmittance policy. This has been a problem in the past. I went to a concert at the Stadium a few years ago and my friend’s wife forgot her purse when we left. Security wouldn’t let her back in to get it. Instead they sent one of their people after it and, fortunately, they found it. They had a similar issue at Anaheim and they let her back in to get it. The moral here is, she needs to have that thing surgically attached.
I finally worked my way around to the new center field entrance, the so-called new front door. The area is fenced off so the only way to access it is when you present your ticket upon entering or when you leave after the game. Ergo my reasoning behind walking around the INSIDE of the Stadium. There is a bronze statue of Jackie Robinson sliding into second and a huge golden glove honoring all the gold glove winners of past years. By now the game was over, a 3-2 Dodgers victory, and people were slowly making their way out. I simply wanted to get a closer look and some pictures. They are, after all, there for the fans. The security guard absolutely refused to give me access. Where were these guys when Eric and I were sneaking down to field level with an assortment of WMD’s?!
Well, I’m back in two weeks for the Angels series. Call this a trial run. I’ll make sure my wife brings her big purse so we can sneak in snacks, maybe some chopped onions. This time we are on the second deck where we have more food choices. And we will exit via the front door. And bring masks. And leave our cash at home. And leave at least 30 minutes earlier. Won’t need binoculars either. Yeah, COVID has definitely forced some changes, much of it in technology. I think we, as a society, were headed down the digital brick road anyway. This pandemic has just quickened the transition. I rarely use cash anymore. I shop more online. I use fast food apps. These are all new procedures and there is a learning curve. I’m sure the Dodgers will get this streamlined by next season. But I sure miss Farmer John and onions!
So tired of the COVID procedure and the on and off again Mask mandates. But over all I will definitely miss the Onions on my Dodger dogs… thanks for the heads up, think I’ll have to smuggle some onions in. LOL.
