For this week’s edition of “The blog that ate Bakersfield” I’ve decided to do a food review. Since I live in Bakersfield, I’ll review a Bakersfield restaurant. I’ll review other places, not necessarily in Bakersfield, from time to time. But I live in Bakersfield so most of my reviews will probably be close to home. I’m not Guy Fieri with a budget to take me to restaurants all over the country. You will have to be satisfied with what I can show you on the local cuisine scene. Know what I mean? One disclaimer though. While I am a pretty decent cook, I am by no means a chef. I’m also not a snooty wine connoisseur. I like to eat and if the food is good, I’ll probably eat too much of it. The same can be said about my wine consumption. A second disclaimer. I have only lived in Bakersfield for about nine years. One of the things that really amazed me when we moved here is the number of really fine restaurants in this town. Fine dining is something not often associated with Bakersfield. We are one of the best kept secrets in California when it comes to good places to dine. Among a plethora of choices, Bakersfield has a stellar reputation for Basque restaurants. You can bet I’ll blog about that sooner or later. Barbeque? Got it covered. Indian? Vietnamese? Check and double check. Great burgers and sandwiches? Ditto! Mexican? Of course. Italian? Funny you should ask.
If you live in Bakersfield, you are probably already familiar with Frugatti’s Italian restaurant. But if you are passing through town and want to enjoy some really excellent Southern Italian cuisine then Frugatti’s is a must. The restaurant was established in 1990 by Raffaele Giovanni Fruguglietti but you can call him Ralph. Thirty-one years later and Ralph still goes into the restaurant a couple times a week. It is still family owned and primarily run by his children. Frugatti’s prides itself on using nothing but the freshest and best tasting ingredients for all of their dishes. Having dined here a number of times I can state that the food is always excellent as is the service.
Frugatti’s managed to weather the storm of the COVID pandemic and they are now busier than ever. We arrived on a Saturday night about 6:00 o’clock to find a large crowd waiting in the outside courtyard. We were told there was an hour to an hour and a half wait for a table for two. Turns out the crowd was there for a wine tasting event being held in their wine cavern later, after the current event, a wedding reception finished. We had been driving all day, so I used the time to top off the gas tank in my truck. And, as it turned out, our wait was only about 45 minutes. When our table was ready, they sent us a text message, a rather nice innovation. Our waitress was Harmony, a gracious young lady who has worked there for seven years. She confided that, like most restaurants post pandemic, Frugatti’s is struggling to find staff but overall, they are doing pretty well. Even though they were packed, and a little short-staffed Harmony managed to spend some time with us and made us feel welcome.
She started me off with a Classic Margarita made with Jose Cuervo tequila. Margaritas are my go-to pre-dinner cocktail. I’ve had good and I’ve had bad. I like my Margarita on the rocks with salt and I like it to be sweet on the palate, not bitter as some are. This was just right, sweet the way I like it with just enough tequila to provide a little bite. My wife started with a house merlot. The house wine, this evening, was provided by Coastal Vineyards of California. I myself had a house cabernet, supplied by the same vineyard, with dinner. The cabernet was light on the tannins and heavy on the fruit. The result was a dry, smokey flavor with a fruity aftertaste. I rather enjoyed it although I suspect most connoisseurs look for heavier tannins in their cabernet. As I said, I like what I like and make no apologies if it goes against the grain. We were served bread with the wine. The bread is freshly baked there at the restaurant and came with a plate drizzled with olive oil. We added balsamic vinegar for a tasty dipping sauce.
As an appetizer we had the stuffed mushrooms. They are stuffed with ground Italian sausage, mozzarella and parmesan cheese, garlic, and herbs. They were served hot and delicious. This was followed with a bowl of clam chowder. I love my clam chowder and Frugatti’s serves some of the best in Bakersfield. It had bite size chunks of clam and potato with bits of bacon and not too much flour. Too much flour will make the soup too thick and flour tasting.
Then our main courses arrived. My wife had the Atlantic cod campagna style cooked in foil and smothered in capers, tomatoes, garlic, and onions with asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes on the side. I myself am more of a salmon eater and the cod, while good, was a bit too fishy for my taste. If you like seafood, I recommend Frugatti’s wood fried salmon with fat Sammy sauce. I’ve had it before, and it is delicious. For my entre I had something different as I knew I would be writing about our meal and wanted to try something I hadn’t had before. It may be a little stereotypical, but I had the spicy Italian sausage ravioli with Bolognese sauce. Excellent! The raviolis were large and packed with spicy sausage, broccolini, and cheese. The Bolognese sauce was rich and had just a touch of tomato but not so much as to offset the wonderful flavor of the simmered meat it contained. Overall an excellent meal for two. And the cost? Reasonable! My margarita, two glasses of house wine, stuffed mushrooms, two bowls of chowder, the Atlantic cod, and the ravioli for less than $120 including tip. If you really are trying to eat on more of a budget replace the bar tab with a couple of iced teas. And that’s a lot of food. You can probably eliminate the stuffed mushrooms bringing the whole bill down to under $75 with tip.
Another thing about Frugatti’s is the size of the menu. It really is large and varied with a lot of different choices from steaks to seafood or pasta or pizza and much more. They even serve burgers. Also, if you’re doing an event, they have their enormous wine cave mentioned earlier. They host the aforementioned wedding parties, wine tasting events and much more. So, if you are new to the area or plan on passing through soon, do yourself a favor and stop in at Frugatti’s. And if you have lived in Bakersfield awhile and haven’t been to Frugatti’s recently, or ever, you should go. Especially post pandemic, we really need to support all of the restaurants in town. It’s time to get back to normal. Time to start going out for dinner on Friday or Saturday nights.
